With storms raging across our nation, it seems a good time to take inventory of how prepared you are in case you lose power for an extended period of time. Coincidentally, September is National Preparedness Month! This is a great time to create an emergency food supply, or take a look at your existing one to ensure all your food is up to date.
Following a disaster, there could be power outages that last several days. At a minimum, try to store at least a three day supply of foods your family will eat in case of an evacuation, two weeks in case of a long-term outage. In terms of water, Ready.gov suggests a gallon of water, per person, per day.
Considerations for food include:
- High energy, high protein foods
- Comfort food
- Canned, dried, non-perishable foods your family enjoys
House of Jerky For An Emergency
The protein found in the House of Jerky meats is sure to keep you full through the day. Even outside of emergencies, people are choosing to replace their meals with House of Jerky! Nearly all of our jerky has a long shelf life – check the best buy date on your packages to see when you need to replace it. And by replace, we mean, utilize that excuse to gobble it up.
House of Jerky also doesn’t require a can opener or some way to cook it, although, it can be utilized to add flavor and protein to sauces or oatmeal.
Are You Prepared For An Emergency?
Yes, be sure to have enough water and enough food to keep you nourished and comforted but there are some other supplies that a basic emergency supply kit could include:

- flashlight
- first aid kit
- extra batteries
- garbage bags
- baby wipes or moist towelettes
- back up cell phone battery
- pet food
- matches
- warm blanket for each person
We hope you, your family and friends stay safe during this upcoming hurricane season!
